Maryland Center for Montessori Studies

The Maryland Center for Montessori Studies (MCMS) is operated by the Montessori Society of Central Maryland, Inc., a non-profit organization founded to further the teaching principles and philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. Successful completion of the Early Childhood Teacher Certification Program results in teacher certification by the American Montessori Society. MCMS is affiliated with the American Montessori Society (AMS), accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) and approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission.

Our Mission

Inspiring and cultivating strong Montessori advocates and leaders as champions for the human spirit.

Our Philosophy

The main goal of the Maryland Center for Montessori Studies Early Childhood certification program is to inspire, instruct, and cultivate Montessori teachers. As Montessori pedagogy focuses on the spiritual, psychological and cognitive realms of the child, our program also focuses on the preparation and transformation of the whole teacher as well as on the importance of the prepared environment. The program instills in our adult learners a deep respect for children and sensitivity to their needs and different styles of learning.

Our Program

The Maryland Center for Montessori Studies helps interested individuals become highly effective Montessori advocates and leaders. Successful completion of the Early Childhood Teacher Certification Program results in an Early Childhood Teaching Certification by the American Montessori Society.

The program content includes Montessori philosophy, theories of child development, the use of Montessori didactic materials, early childhood Montessori curricula, observation techniques, effective record keeping, classroom management, healthy parent communication, and effective administration.

This two-year program is formatted to allow an individual who is currently working full-time, to attend classes. The Academic portion of the program begins with an intensive two weeks of summer classes in August 2017.  This is followed by monthly weekend seminars, meeting one weekend a month, Friday – Sunday, from September through May. The Academic portion of the program culminates with another two weeks of intensive summer classes in August 2018. The Practicum, or Student Teaching, begins September 2018 and ends June 2019.

Please see our Dates and Rates page for more information regarding our Summer 2017 Early Childhood Teacher Training Program. We have limited openings, so we encourage you to enroll soon so that you don’t miss out on this opportunity!
